We Need to Talk About JD Vance
The Republican Vice Presidential Candidate's comments about childless people not only was an own goal, but highlights what sort of person and politician JD Vance is
Before we start, lets be clear about JD Vance being the Republican Vice Presidential Candidate. He is there because of Trump and if we know anything about Donald Trump then we should not be surprised that such a person is his running mate. I doubt either of the Bush Presidents would have picked him, certainly not Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, or many of their Republican predecessors going back to Abraham Lincoln. They would have been too canny, they would have seen the heavy collateral damage caused by a Vance outburst, whether it is calling the UK Labour government Islamist (Republican Presidents have had a cordial relationship with Labour governments, even if not ideologically aligned), or indeed insulting the senior Democrats who do not have children.
Vance, to be fair, has suddenly realised, or rather perhaps Republican strategists have realised, the damage that was caused by these comments, so Vance has done some back peddling, but not a full and open apology (no, that would be too humiliating for him and this Christian does not like wearing sackcloth and ashes, well at least not in front of liberals). He has said that this was not a criticism of childless people, but rather an attack on the Democrats for being “anti family”
